Two years and two days ago, I applauded Donald Trump with gusto. Not because I'm a fan, but because he was a guest on Late Show With David Letterman, and I was in the balcony of the Ed Sullivan Theater, heeding Alan Kalter's exhortations to clap.
It was unfathomable at the time (and still is today) that this event now reads as a missed "Sic semper tyrannis" moment. If inconsistency were a Trump novelty, it would be noteworthy that his response to Dave's First Amendment defense of flag-burning (see 9:39 mark) was "that's true, you're 100% right."
