I don't mean to damn with faint praise, but Benjamin Franklin was (and is) the best high school in the state of Louisiana. Franklin's top academic ranking came despite its facilities; during my enrollment the school was housed in an unairconditioned mid-19th century building, squeezed onto a city block along with a few portables.
The lack of space meant there wasn't enough room for the whole student body to have lunch in the "cafetorium," so students were allowed to leave campus to eat; the Burger King across the street was patronized regularly. Consequently, when a number of parents' cars were towed for parking in the lot of The Home Of The Whopper during the school's Fall 1986 Open House, the students felt betrayed, and responded with a "Boycott BK" campaign to hit the fast food establishment in its pocketbook. My classmates and the flame-broilers eventually settled their beef, though we did not receive a visit from Herb.
